Striking African Art Exhibits Kick Off Two-Year Celebration At Newark Museum
Jesse and Dave recently checked out Newark Museum's "Royals & Regalia: Inside the Palaces of Nigeria’s Monarchs” and “Hassan Hajjaj: My Rock Stars,” exhibitions that kick-off a two-year celebration of the Museum’s collecting of African art. A major reinstallation is targeted for completion in 2017, the centennial year of the Museum’s African art collection.
“Royals & Regalia: Inside the Palaces of Nigeria’s Monarchs” presents 40 visually stunning portraits from a new series by acclaimed Nigerian photographer George Osodi. Exhibited for the first time in the U.S., these vibrant color photographs feature the regional rulers of modern-day monarchies throughout the country.
“Hassan Hajjaj: My Rock Stars” presents a video installation and related series of photographs in a salon installation by Moroccan-born, UK-based artist Hassan Hajjaj. Combining photography, video, music, fashion and interior design, this exhibition showcases Hajjaj's personal "rock stars" -- an eclectic group of nine musicians from around the world who inspire the artist.
Both exhibits are on view through August 9. The Newark Museum, 49 Washington Street, Newark, NJ 07102, is open Wednesday-Sunday, noon til 5 PM.
