Mason Gross School of the Arts
Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is the state's flagship public arts conservatory. Here, student artists, award-winning faculty, and notable visiting guests come together to present captivating performances and exhibitions. Faculty include award-winning theater artists, members of the New York Philharmonic, The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and several Grammy-winning jazz artists. The Pop Art and Fluxus art movements got their start at Rutgers.
At Mason Gross, the artistic life of the university and the larger community is enhanced through a diverse array of events offering discounts for the Rutgers community, alumni, and seniors 62+. Most event tickets are $15; many events are free. From innovative theater productions and dance performances to thought-provoking film screenings and art exhibitions, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Sets, lighting, and costumes are all designed and executed by Mason Gross students in collaboration with faculty. Each event is a testament to the school's commitment to artistic excellence and its mission to forge connections among individuals and communities.
Graduates of Mason Gross emerge not only with degrees but with a dedication to making meaningful contributions to the arts world—onstage, backstage, in galleries, classrooms, studios, and beyond. The faculty of professional working artists prepares students for a wide range of career paths. Prominent alumni include Academy Award-nominated actor Sebastian Stan ("Captain America"; "The Apprentice"), actor Mike Colter ("Luke Cage"), MacArthur "Genius" and composer Courtney Bryan, musician Marissa Paternoster (named one of the 250 greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone), Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Matt Rainey, Tony Award-winning actor Roger Bart, ABC News producer Eric Ortega, and Stephanie Klemons (associate choreographer/original cast member of Broadway's "Hamilton"). Others design costumes on Broadway and for TV, including Tori Sterling, who creates costumes for "LIVE with Kelly & Mark's" Halloween and Oscars specials.
Events take place at the Mason Gross Performing Arts Center, at 85 George St. in New Brunswick, and downtown at the Mason Gross Galleries at Civic Square, 33 Livingston Ave., and at the dazzling New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, at 11 Livingston Ave.
