Harmonium Choral Society

Harmonium Choral Society, formed in 1979, has become one of New Jersey’s leading choral arts organizations, recognized for its musical excellence and innovative programming. Directed by Dr. Anne Matlack, the 100+ volunteer choir and 25-voice Chamber Singers are chosen through a selective audition process. They perform a broad choral repertoire with music from many cultures and time periods and have a commitment to commissioning new works.

Their choir is multi-generational and includes high school and college-age singers, teachers, IT professionals, artists, lawyers, and nurses, medical professionals, to name a few. Many singers lead their own choirs in schools or at places of worship. Harmonium is a proud member of Chorus America, the NJ Choral Consortium, and NJ American Choral Directors Association.

Harmonium presents four concerts during the season, performing music to express a theme selected from a worldwide array of cultures, composers, styles, and languages. In addition, choir members sing at community events such as First Night in Morristown, a Halloween concert in Madison, and retirement centers. Their annual High School Student Choral Composition Contest, now in its 26th year, won the prestigious Chorus America Education and Outreach Award. Annual contest winners are premiered by Harmonium in concert. In 2010, the chorus was chosen to perform for the Eastern Division Convention of the American Choral Directors Association, and in 1998 Morris Arts presented Harmonium with the Outstanding Arts Organization Award.

Harmonium Choral Society aims to inspire and enrich its community through the shared experience of excellent choral performance and the advancement of choral art. To perform a diverse repertoire of choral music and to offer innovative and inclusive programming, artistic collaborations, educational opportunities, and community partnerships while creating challenging and uplifting experiences where excellence flourishes.
