Kara Rooney is a working artist born and raised in New Jersey. After graduating from Bates College and Parson’s School of Design – Paris in 2001, she relocated to the east coast in order to pursue her career as an artist and writer. Currently, Kara is working towards an M.F.A in Art Criticism at the School of Visual Arts in an effort to pursue her interest in the intersection between the visual arts and the written word.

Of her work she states, “As our mastery of language increases, so does our understanding, usage and emphasis of the written word. Often, this ability enables us to understand the meaning of a text more clearly, while at other times, it can completely alter the original context of a work. In a society which finds itself increasingly dependant on the commercial coalescence of image and text, the visual arts has become one of the last frontiers with which to challenge these accepted notions of meaning. My work is created in response to such aforementioned subtleties of language, and more specifically, its subsequent impact on the development of feminine identity. By employing the use of phonetics, puns and word associations which deal with both the literal and metaphorical connotations of lexis, I consistently use the vernacular as the basis for a more critical visual inquiry on the subject of human nature and its written counterpart. As such, my work aims to highlight the slippage between auditory cues and literal meaning as well as the mutability between text and image.”

Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums including The National Women's Museum, San Francisco, CA; Chelsea Art Museum, New York, NY; Visual Arts Gallery, New York, NY; Artists Space, New York, NY; Gallery Aferro, Newark, NJ; Midday Gallery, Englewood, NJ; Ristra Gallery, Hoboken, NJ; Edward Williams Gallery, Hackensack, NJ; Southern Vermont Art Center, Manchester, VT; Gallery 29, Boston, MA; The Jersey City Museum, NJ; among others. She has been an artist in residence at both the Lower East Side Print Shop, Inc. and the MassArt Artist in Residence program.
